What’s Your Story?

Stories stick.  Stories teach.  In a recent Contacts Count workshop, it was exciting to see Jean use the 5-S Formula to put together this story.  Her goal?  To remind alumni – in a gentle way – that they can remember the university in their wills.

Segue:  We’ve got a new staffer at the alumni house office – a four-legged one that meows.

Situation:   Whisker’s owner was a very active and beloved alum who passed away suddenly and left Whiskers – and more than a million dollars – to the university.

SNAFU: When we got word of George’s death, my staff knew what to do with the million dollars.  But what would we do with Whiskers?

Solution:  Our secretary said, “Whiskers can live right here, in the office! Why not?”  Everybody pitches in and helps with his care – even during vacations.  And this does seems to be the perfect place for him.  There’s a sunny file cabinet in my office that he loves to sit on top of, and sometimes he hangs out in the lobby to greet visitors.

Significance:  We’ll have groundbreaking soon for a new Science Lab, thanks to this alum.  Whisker’s owner had served on the alumni board, so we knew him well.  All of us in the alumni office were happy when we got the word that he’d left a bequest to the university – but really touched when we found out he’d entrusted us with his cat!
